What's in the light is beautiful, most of the time. But what's in the light becomes intriguing and precious when we understand that it has its perfect opposite in the dark. Further, this is nothing compared with what's between the bright and the dark sides: the penumbra. The penumbra is a mysterious space, weirdly limited by its borders with the light on one side and the shadow on the other. The weird thing I'm talking about is that, carefully looking at it, the penumbra doesn't seem to have borders, although it is included between two definite places. The penumbra's size is always changing and it's got an infinite amount of shades.

There is what we show to the world, what we expose to the light. There is what we preciously, sometimes shamefully, keep in the dark. And there is the penumbra. Our penumbra is always changing according to where we decide to stand and how we move. Our penumbra is a synthesis of who we are within a precise time frame. But in that penumbra, nothing is ultimate. In that penumbra lie our several faces.

Trying to capture the penumbra in photography is a fascinating activity.

I'd like to thank Géraldine for experimenting the penumbra in front of my lens.
